How do I take care of my skin when working out?

Did you know that exercise has many benefits when it comes to your skin’s health due to increasing blood circulation? This results in bright and glowy skin! However a common question that we get asked is when do I apply my products when I plan on exercising?

Follow our pre-, during and post-workout skin care guide to learn when to fit your skin care routine around your workout plan!

Pre-workout

  1. Have a clean, makeup-free face

During your workout your body will heat up and your pores will open. It’s important that your skin can breathe and that make-up won’t settle and ultimately clog your pores causing breakouts. If you aren’t comfortable going to the gym with zero makeup we would recommend using something light like Dermalogica’s SkinPerfect Primer SPF30. This will smooth fine lines, even out skin texture and create a ‘soft focus effect’ without being too heavy on the skin.

  1. Make sure that you apply sunscreen

Even if you aren’t exercising outside, it’s always very important to have sunscreen on! This is because the sun's harsh rays can still cause damage through windows. Our favourite workout SPF is Dermalogica’s Protection 50 Sport – this lightweight formula helps neutralise damage and bind moisture to skin without a greasy after-feel.

During workout

  1. Use a clean, medium weight gym towel

Fluffy, thick gym towels can hold on to bacteria even after being washed. We recommend a medium thickness towel that doesn’t have much plush to it (bacteria can hide between the fibres!)

  1. Keep your hair off (and don’t touch!) your face

It’s best to keep hair pulled back to prevent oils and your hair products from clogging your pores. This will probably more comfortable too!

Also, don’t forget to not touch your face throughout your workout! Gyms are full of sweat and germs that you wouldn’t want to transfer to your skin.

Post-workout

  1. Wash your face and change out of your workout gear ASAP!

Sweat, debris and bacteria can be built up during your workout on both your face and body. Use a mild cleanser to clean your face and prevent blocked pores – we recommend Biologi’s BC Refresh Cleanser as it is super gentle. Make sure you change out of your workout clothes as they can trap sweat and oil next to your skin which can cause body acne. Using a salicylic acid cleanser like Clear Start’s Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash on the body can help deep clean and clear pores to prevent breakouts on your back, neck and body.

  1. Hydrate

Drink lots of water after your workout so you don’t become dehydrated! Hydration is also important for your skin after all the sweat you have been losing. It’s best to wait until your skin has cooled to make sure your moisturiser won’t just melt off, and apply something lightweight like Dermalogica’s Calm Water Gel.

Bonus tip: After working out it is so important to make sure you rest and recover. This includes getting your 7-9 hours of sleep!
