Inspiration Series : Kathryn Wilson

Welcome to the third entry of our Inspiration Series, where we interview women who are inspiring us daily through their work, creativity, motherhood, business and passion.

Today we meet Kathryn Wilson, business woman, designer, entrepeneur, and creative. Owner of the incredible footwear brand renowned for it's unique, feminine and bold designs. We chat business, balance, and what inspires her to create.

How was your business born?

I launched the brand in 2003 , I was 23 years old and wanted to make limited edition shoes that were different to what everyone was wearing at the time. We were a wholesale business for 9 years before opening our first retail boutique … a pop-up ‘shoebox’ in Britomart for the Rugby World Cup celebrations… we now have three boutiques in Auckland, our online store www.kathrynwilson.com and supply to over 80 stores throughout NZ.

Daily rituals for your physical and mental health.

I am focusing on my wellbeing lately… trying to drink at least 2L daily, fitting in pilates sessions 3 x times a week, a walk with the dog every day and getting to bed early with a book as much as possible… my youngest daughter is now 18 months old and starting to sleep through the night thank goodness so sleep is a new found joy in our hosehold!!!

What do you love about being a woman in business?

I like to think I would inspire and encourage other women to follow their passion with their career choice and be brave to take risks along the way.

Top 3 pieces of advice for other women wanting to begin/grow their business?

Surround yourself with positive, optimistic people that ‘fill your cup’ and listen to the advice passed on from those who have been there before you.

What inspires you to create?

I selfishly design our collections based on what I want to be wearing myself next season… but get inspiration from music, film, holidays when you have time to reflect and build on ideas.

Personal motto that you live by.

choose a job you love and you never work a day in your life…
